About this Idea

When new residents move into a building, it can be hard to build new relationships and integrate into existing neighbour networks. More often than not, neighbours remain strangers even if they see each other frequently in the elevator. To overcome this obstacle, form a Welcome Committee to help ease new residents into your building. Connect with the building managers to find out when new residents are moving in, quick tip, ask when the elevator is being booked for moves.

Create “Welcome Packages” that can be delivered once new residents have settled. The Welcome Package could include information about the building such as names and numbers of key personnel in the building, how to book common rooms, or existing committees and social activities. It could also include previous newsletters or event posters for social activities to give newcomers a sense of the community you’re trying to build. You can also host a small gathering every few months to welcome the new arrivals as a way to break the ice. Local libraries often have a number of free flyers about the community and possibly even coupons to local trusted retailers.
