PART 3: SUSTAINING

Honour Participation

One of the ways to ensure that members in your aging in place group feel valued is to honour their participation and contribution. This not only encourages continued participation but also invites others to start participating as well. While it doesn’t take much to honour others for their participation, these gestures could go a long way in sustaining an initiative.

Offer rewards

Based on your budget and capacity, determine the appropriate incentives or rewards to encourage participation. This could be as simple as giving out small gifts that you pick up at the dollar store, or simply making a point of acknowledging and thanking volunteers by name at events.

Shine a light

If there are members who consistently volunteer and contribute to various activities or events, make sure you honour their contributions. Some ideas include highlighting a special volunteer in the newsletter, hosting a volunteer party or handing out a special “Volunteer of the Month” certificates with a small reward (e.g. giftcard).
